Josef Barvic (1853–1924) opened a bookstore in 1883. He later employed Josef Novotný (1881–1952), and the firm became the partnership Barvič & Nowotný in 1909.
In the 1920s and 30s the firm published music and supported Czech artists such as the violinist Jan Kubelík (1880–1940). The firm was nationalized in 1948 then re-privatised in 1990. It now is part of the Eoromedia publishing group.
