There is a seeming discrepancy in Victoria having published an even verse setting of the famous Marian hymn Ave maris stella in his 1581 Hymni totius anni, and then including it again identically in his 1600 Venetian hymn collection (1600b). According to Nancho Álvarez, the setting in the 1600a Madrid collection of his large multiple choir works consists of only a single even verse (Sumens illud ave); so why has Pedrell produced four different odd verses ascribed to one of the 1600 prints? It seems unlikely Victoria intended the two versions (if he even is responsible for the odd verses) to be sung together, all seven verses sung as polyphony. The table below indicates which scores include what musical material (since Pedrell omits plainsong).
