Extra Information

The German language text is part of a Danish language play
Sanct Hansaften-Spil (1803) by the Danish poet, Adam Oehlenschläger. According to the scholar Emil Gigas (1849-1931) the song was not
written by Oehlenschläger himself but was rather taken from the repertoire
of the persons singing it in the play, Jøderne under Træet (the
jews under the tree). They were real persons in Copenhagen in Gerson's and
Oehlenschläger's lifetime: Michel Levin (1740-1835) and Esther Simon
(1761-1815). See "Nogle historiske »Antegnelser« til Oehlenschlægers
St. Hansaften-Spil" in "Litteratur og historie, studier og essays",
Copenhagen 1898, pp. 114-115.
