History

Arrow Music Press was founded in 1938 by Lehman Engel (1910-1982), Marc Blitzstein (1905-1964), Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) and Aaron Copland (1900-1990). It is considered to have been one of the more remarkable efforts by American composers to form their own publishing company. With the acquisition of the non-profit-publisher Cos Cob Press, who had ceased publishing new music by the late 1930s, and a more business-like manner of organization, the new company gained importance while remaining non-commercial. In 1956, the company was bought by Boosey & Hawkes.
