Program notes:
While I may have taken some liberty with the term “aria” in the title of this work, the concept of the dramatic-expressive vocal solo has had some influence in its formation. The electronic sounds recorded on tape may be appreciated both as musical accompaniment to the trombone and as “aural scenery”, setting mood and environment in a role similar to the stage set and lighting of opera.
The trombonist follows and elaborates upon a basic framework of pitch, rhythm, muting, and general instructions, following an accurate notation of the tape sounds; this, along with his interpretation and interaction with the electronic sounds, forms the trombonist’s role in his/her performance of Aria.
Premier performance January 1983, Dan Livesay, trombone.
