Nielsen composed the melody on request by the organist Johannes Hansen. According to Nielsen's diary, the song was finished on 2 April 1928. In a letter to Thorvald Aagaard, he argued that it should be included in the forthcoming edition of Folkehøjskolens Melodibog.
