This is a psalm composed during the Finnish Civil War for a competition sponsored by Suomen Lähetysseura (Finnish Missionary Society). Kuula wrote the lyrics to a Finnish transl. by Georg Weilin (Yrjö Veijola) which in turn is based on a Swedish interpretation by Lars Stenbäck (1811-1870). The original 17th-century German text has not been found. Aftonbön was declared winner posthumously in December 1918 as the war had delayed the work of the jury and Kuula was already dead. The psalm has almost always been sung by mixed choirs (although it was not intended for that ensemble) due to first publication in an anonymous arrangement for mixed chorus in E♭ major.
