A lost early version in six movements titled Serenata lagunosa was first performed 16 February 1922 by Victor Schiøler. Langgaard reduced this to five movements for the second performance the following month and a third performance by the composer on 16 January 1923 under the title Psalmen des Afgrunds, Suite für Piano. Langgaard then revised the work again in 1924, reducing it to two long movements, completing it 6 January 1924. This definitive final version was first performed in 1967 by Bengt Johnsson and published in 1993 along with Insektarium, BVN 134, which is probably non-PD life+50 as its first performance was in 1977 (i.e., 47 years ago at time of writing).
