Misc. Notes Author's note from one of the versions of the score:

"This composition is an homage to the 17th-century japanese poet Matsuo Bashō". The titles of the pieces reproduce some images from his haikus. However, the pieces are not related to Bashō's particular poems and shouldn't be treated as illustrations. All pieces are 17 measures long and sectioned into 5+7+5, which is the reflection of the metrical structure of haiku poems: 5+7+5 syllables.

The pieces were composed in a manner that doesn't leave much liberty to performers. The key to a good performance is precision. The utmost attention should be paid to the indications of dynamics, which are usually divided into several layers. The technique of orchestration used in this score requires very clear distinguishing between "real sounds" and "subsounds" or "aftersounds". The latters are always marked sotto voce."
