Zierlich ist des Vogels Tritt im Schnee,

In die Lüfte hoch der Reiher steigt,

Dainty is the bird's footprints in the snow
when it walks on the mountain hights:
my darling's dear hand writes more daintily,
writes a letter to me in far-off lands.

A heron rises high into the sky,
so high that neither arrow nor bullet can reach it:
a thousand times as high and rapid
are the thoughts of true lovers.
