The term "secular" was added by the composer after failing to decide which bona fide chorale text and tune would fit his purpose, so he devised short trilingual meditative texts himself, apart from the third piece in two parts, based on an expostulation from psalm 142:4. The Hebrew term Maskil is used here in the sense of "Meditation' which is not its original, albeit uncertain, meaning.
