These three responsorial chants are intended for use in funeral or commemorative services. For that purpose the vocal parts have been kept simple and diatonic, allowing the accompaniment to provide much of the color and expression.
The pieces can be sung by a solo voice entirely, by a unison chorus (men, women or both) or by solo voice and chorus, as indicated in the score. The tonal ambitus is restricted to no more than 8 tones, making the music suitable for any type of voice.
Either organ, piano or harmonium can be used as accompaniment. The low notes in small print are intended for organ pedal only.
