According to Otto Erich Deutsch, the manuscript, headed "Quatuor N° 5", was written by an unknown hand and does not include a composer's name. The very short sketch only consists of measures 1-6 for Violin 1, measure 2 for Violin II, and measures 5-6 for the Cello. The work is included as the last page of the autograph of Franz Schubert's "Evangelium Johannis 6, Vers 55–58", D.607 (Wiener StadtbibI., MH 3527/c). Maurice J. E. Brown discussed the piece in his article "Discoveries of the Last Decade," (Musical Quarterly LVII, 1971, pp.351-378, especially p.353), attributing it to Schubert at the time. However, this was later determined not to be the case.
