Preceded by several string quartets that the composer destroyed (see Moeran.net). There is also one other surviving string quartet in E major, composition date unknown (so possibly earlier and possibly later. "Statistically speaking" probably later - as the A minor is a fairly early, student-years work already - but that counts for aught!) Performed in a concert mostly of Moeran's music at Wigmore Hall in early 1923, though perhaps premiered earlier. - E. Sch.

Dedicatee was in England originally as a Belgian refugee from WWI and was known as a performer of John Ireland's Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor.
