The Organ Symphony No. 2 is is neo-romantic, extrovert but profound, and consists of 5 movements. The 1st one is severe and monumental, moderately fast and in sonata form (but development section and reprise are in one). The 2nd one is very intimate and slow, in Lied form and has a religious atmosphere; two captivating and ever flowing themes can be distinguished. The 3rd one is a playful and very fast scherzo. The 4th one is mysterious and slow, a bit choral-like, and in Lied form. The 5th and final movement is vivid and fast and in sonata form; in the coda the main theme of the 1st movement returns majestically and the piece ends in a solemn way. Registration indications (based upon the Hauptwerk sound set of the Mutin / Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Notre Dame in Metz) are intended as a help and are mainly notated as in late French romantic organ music (Widor, Vierne). In 2016 I have revised the piece, checking every registration indication and every bar and I can assure now that the piece is entirely playable (the only problem may be the quick sixteenth notes in the pedals of the Scherzo) and that it will sound great if you follow my registration indications. The recording (digital performance in Sibelius 5 with Garritan Personal Orchestra, not Hauptwerk !) gives, besides the registration indications, a scant indication of the sound I want.
