Palestrina quotes the 4-part motet with the same text published in 1588 by M.A. Ingegneri, who became choirmaster at Cremona in 1570. Ingegneri's 4-part motet was mistakenly attributed to Palestrina until 1897.

Grove Music lists four works with the incipit O bone Jesu. In addition to this 8-voice motet, there is also a 6-voice motet, and then O bone Jesu, miserere and O bone Jesu o piisime, both for 4 voices. These last two are both are considered by Grove to be "Doubtful or unconfirmed".
