First publication: 1995 in an edition for Faber Music by Neil Heyde who conjectured that the unusual title might indicate some specific musical characteristics (e. g. in the sense of a scherzo with the character of a nocturne) which in turn would
mean there was only one movement. In a new edition (Henle HN945, 2009) E-G. Heinemann thinks there were initially 2 movements and labeled the piece simply "Scherzo", intentionally moving away from the title 'Nocturne et Scherzo'
which appears just once in the manuscript, on the separate outer title page of the solo instrumental part.
