The group was formed by Joseph Zoellner of New York in 1903. The members studied under Cesar Thomson in Brussels from ca.1904 to 1911, thanks to the patronage of Ethel Crocker, the wife of the banker William Henry Crocker. It was based in California and toured mainly in the US.
