- Detailed biography: Composer, Violist, and Conductor Bailey Rickman was born on September 7, 2004, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Rickman began taking piano lessons, after hearing his mom playing fragments of classical pieces on piano, before learning the violin at 10 years old. After playing violin, he'd switch to viola five years later. Rickman studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy for two years with Renee Skerik and is currently studying with Jordan Bak and Brett Deubner at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. As a violist, Rickman has participated in various masterclasses and has learned from renowned violists including Matthias Buchholz, Hsiaopei Lee, & Jone Kaliunaite. As an orchestral musician, Rickman has performed under world renowned conductors including Tito Muñoz, Leslie B. Dunner, Jung-Ho Pak, Cristian Măcelaru, Kenneth Kiesler, & Julius P. Williams. Rickman is an engaging chamber musician, participating in various festivals including International Chamber Music Academy of Ochsenhausen, Germany and The Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont, and performing with renowned musicians, including hornist Zora Slokar and cellist Hillel Zori. As a composer on the rise, a few of Rickman's composition were premeired by several faculty members and colleagues at University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Rickman also participated in the composition program of the International Summer Academy of Music in Germany. Rickman’s favorite musical artists include Julia Fischer, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Jörg Widmann, Sarah Aristidou, Tabea Zimmermann and Antoine Tamestit, and his favorite composers include J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, L. v. Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Alban Berg, Paul Hindemith, Béla Bartók, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Jörg Widmann. When not focusing on music, Rickman’s hobbies include video gaming, going to classical concerts, watching movies, and learning German.
