The original personnel (1912-1940) of the Pro Arte Quartet were:

- violoncello: Fernand-Auguste Lemaire (1912-1916) ; Fernand Quinet (1916-1922) ; Robert Maas (1922-1946)
Alphonse Onnou founded the group in Brussels in 1912. It made its American debut in 1926 in New York. It premiered or was the dedicatee of many works by Bartók, Milhaud and Honegger. In 1941 it accepted a residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The name is still used as that university's
quartet in residence.
