Miscellaneous information
Violist. Originally from Scotland, he was a violinist prodigy, but he changed to viola on joining the
London String Quartet in 1930. His later career was in the USA: From 1937 to 1941 he played in the new NBC symphony orchestra. From 1939 at NBC's suggestion the short-lived Primrose Quartet was founded: Oscar Shumsky, Josef Gingold, Harvey Shapiro and Primrose. They recorded three sets of commercial 78s for RCA.
He was a soloist in the 1940s and 50s. He commissioned a viola concerto from Béla Bartók (1944) and premiered it in 1950. Benjamin Britten wrote for him Lachrymae based on the song by Dowland. In the 60s his hearing declined and he was mainly a teacher.
