United States censuses from 1910-40 report that Bertl was born ca.1895/96 in Austria and immigrated to America in 1898 at the age of three. He lived in Newark, New Jersey from at least 1900-30 and stayed in the state till at least 1940. The Jewelers' Circular, Vol.86 No.2 (p.98) mentions Bertl's May 1923 marriage and that he was a Jew. In 1930, he was listed as a teacher of piano, organ, and music theory. Death records give Bertl's death date as 1 October 1982 in St. Petersburg, Florida as well as a specific date of birth (23 July 1895).
