Richard Penrose Arnold (1855-1908) was a son of
Matthew Arnold (1822-88) the poet, and grandson of
Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), headmaster of Rugby School.
William Delafield Arnold (1828-1859), novelist, was his uncle. He worked as an inspector of factories, but was an amateur pianist. He was the only one of Matthew Arnold's four sons to live into adulthood, although his two sisters lived into their 60s.
