Alina Żórawska-Witkowska studied musicology at the University of Warsaw under Zofia Lissa and Józef M. Chomiński, and in 1985 completed a doctoral dissertation at the same institution under Andrzej Chodkowski on music at the court of Stanisław August Poniatowski (published 1995). In 1998, she published the book Music at the Polish Court of August the Strong. She is now a professor at Warsaw University’s Musicological Institute, where she directs the General Music History Department. She is also a Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw. In 1984–5, she received an Italian government scholarship to spend a period in residence at the Università degli Studi di Bologna. Her research focuses on Baroque and Classical music history, in particular the musical culture of Poland and the dissemination of Italian opera, and she has undertaken extensive work in the Sächsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv and the Sächsische Landesbibliothek, Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Dresden.
