Mendelssohn composed these when he was 12 years old while studying with Carl Friedrich Zelter. These fugues were not composed with performance in mind, but as counterpoint exercises. [more...] Mendelssohn also used chorale melodies to experiment with the cantus firmus technique in some of the fugues. There are 17 fugues in the R 1-17 section, but R9, R10, R13, R15 and R16 are incomplete and not listed here.
