According to Nielsen's autobiography, Min fynske Barndom, the quartet was composed in Odense when he was having lessons with the cantor Carl Larsen and playing chamber music with some of his friends. In May 1883, he travelled to Copenhagen for a violin audition and to present the quartet for the composer N.W. Gade, director of the Copenhagen Academy of Music.
