May for dramatic clarity require 3 singers. (The recordings above of all or most of the cycle do use at least two.) Title wasn't even originally Lieder und Gesänge, just "Lieder" (of Mignon, Harfner and Philine...); title Lieder und Gesänge seems to be posthumous and may refer to the overall title of the Breitkopf collected edition?... the title of the apparently very rare first edition (I can only seem to find it offhand at an Australian library, though perhaps some Austrian and other libraries have it too)- op.98a to the op.98b secular requiem that was associated with it - was "Die Lieder Mignon’s, des Harfners und Philinen’s aus Göthe’s Wilhelm Meister". (Ah, no, my mistake, these and these.
