This madrigal celebrates Lamoral, Count of Egmont, who in the Battle of Saint-Quentin (1557) led an unauthorized charge (referred to by "felice errore" ("fortunate error") in the madrigal) that defeated the French just when the forces of Philipp II's seemed close to suffering defeat.
