Adapted from a section (the Hymne) of the 1828 Prix d’Rome cantata, Herminie. The lost version of 1844 utilised six wind instruments by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax, and represents the first known use of the saxophone (David Cairns, Berlioz: Servitude and Greatness, p.299)
