Commentary on the movements

1. [Chorale]: Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost. A vivace (so marked) first movement, using the standard formula of soprano chorale tune, imitative lower voices, and an independent instrumental texture here composed of lively dactyls.
2. Aria (Tenor): Wo wird in diesem Jammertale. Beginning with a pedal point and angular, leaping flute figuration, this aria depicts the "vale of tears" perfectly.
3. Recitativo (Bass): O Sünder, trage mit Geduld. Secco recitative-arioso.
4. Choral (Soprano): Kein Frucht das Weizen körnlein bringt. The hesitating continuo line offers a counterpoint similar to the baseline of the first movement to the choral tune.
5. Aria (Alto): Du machst, o Tod, mir nun nicht ferner bange. Although written in B♭, the movement is so often in the minor that it is almost as dark as the others, yet the "joyful, confident tone" does come through in places¹.
6. Recitativo (Tenor): Indes bedenke deine Seele. Secco recitative.
7. Choral: Wir wachen oder schlafen ein. A plain chorale setting.
