History

Anton Piwarski started a music publishing business in Cracow in 1899. Its official start year was 1897 when Antoni Piwarski, Tadeusz Gieszczykiewicz, and J. Drozdowski, registered the name Antoni Piwarski i Sp., Księgarnia Muzyczna i Wypożyczalnia Nut (Antoni Piwarski and Partners, Music Bookshop and Sheet Music Library).

After Antoni Piwarski died in 1929, Gieszczykiewicz became the sole owner and changed the name to Gieszczykiewicz (1933). Over its 40 year activity the firm gained respect for its publication of Polish composers such as Ignaz Friedman, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński, Feliks Nowowiejski, Ludomir Różycki, Szeluta, Felicjan Szopski, Wallek-Walewski, and a small number by Karol Szymanowski. However, after Gieszczykiewicz died in 1937 the business tailed off, and although a new owner, Tadeusz Zapiór, took over during the war, it was finally closed in 1951.
